Angela Davis, a former Communist Party USA leader and Black Panther, as well as a former member of FBI’s Top Ten Most Wanted, recently spoke at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. Her speech, entitled “Freedom is a Constant Struggle: Why Movements for Social Justice Support Palestine,” was far from impartial or fair.
Her speech was co-sponsored by the Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP), the GW Black Student Union and GW Feminist Student Union. It was to kick off SJP’s ‘Palestine Awareness Week’ to promote awareness about the occupation of Palestine. Angela Davis does not consider The United States nor her ally Israel to be legitimate governments, but “colonial powers.”
She said, “Remember, the United States of America is also a settler colonial nation” similar to Israel and occupied Palestine. She wondered why it is “wrong to criticize the state of Israel” and that she and others “say no to Israel’s ethnic cleansing strategies.” She said that today is the time for “the dismantling of the era of Israeli occupation of Palestine. It has been long and coming.” Davis added, “In standing up against the racism of the state of Israel, we are passionately saying no to anti-Semitism as well.”
Yet George Washington University hosted a debate about the legitimacy of President Donald Trump, and according to Accuracy in Academia 72% of the attendees support the notion that Donald Trump should not be given the opportunity to govern. Speaker David Frum of The Atlantic accused Trump of ushering in the “most unethical and least transparent administration in modern American history,” he went on to criticize him as an “existential threat” to the media.
The Foundation for Individual Rights (FIRE) in Education gives George Washington University a red light for its speech repression policies saying:
“A “red light” institution has at least one policy that both clearly and substantially restricts freedom of speech. A ‘clear’ restriction is one that unambiguously infringes on what is or should be protected expression. In other words, the threat to free speech at a red light institution is obvious on the face of the policy and does not depend on how the policy is applied.
When a university restricts access to its speech-related policies by requiring a login and password, it denies prospective students and their parents the ability to weigh this crucial information. At FIRE, we consider this action by a university to be deceptive and serious enough that it alone warrants a ‘red light’ rating.”
So George Washington University rolls out the red carpet for Angela Davis, former leader of the Communist Party, USA, a Black Panther leader and once on the FBI’s most wanted list for her role as an accessory to a murder. Yet President Trump, a successful businessman whose organization has provided thousands of jobs for American workers, and won the presidency in an overwhelming victory is NOT legitimate according to the radicals in charge at GWU.
And yet we still wonder why the young college educated support so many policies at odds with traditional American values.
